VLADIVOSTOK, May 22 (Itar-Tass) —— Emergency workers blasted an ice jam, which blocked the Kolyma River near Srednekolymsk. This operation made the water leaving the city, Srednekolymsk Mayor Yuri Yudin told Itar-Tass by phone on Tuesday.

The river has been flooding Srednekolymsk for two days, after a gigantic ice jam was formed down the river 40 kilometres away from the city. The ice jam was 14 metres high and five kilometres long. Some 280 residential houses, an oil terminal, an airport and a base of the housing and public utilities sector were flooded in Srednekolymsk, Yudin said. The water encircled the power station, if the water had gone up for another half a meter, the power station would have been disconnected.

To protect the city from the flood about 400 residents in Srednekolymsk have been reinforcing the dam on Monday with more than 3,000 sand bags. Since the danger of the flood passed away, Srednekolymsk began the cleanup of the natural disaster.
