17 forest fires extinguished, 5 localised in Far East over past 24 hrs

Fires have affected 840.5 hectares of forests in the Amur region, Khabarovsk Territory, Sakhalin and Yakutia

KHABAROVSK, May 17 (Itar-Tass) —— Seventeen forest fires have been extinguished and five localised in the Russian Far East over the past 24 hours.

Fires have affected 840.5 hectares of forests in the Amur region, Khabarovsk Territory, Sakhalin and Yakutia.

There are three active forest fires in the Far Eastern Federal District: two in the Amur region and one in Sakhalin.

A total of 407 people, 60 pieces of equipment and eight aircraft are used in the fire-fighting operations.

Since the start of the fire season, 733 forest fires have been registered in an area of 18,708 hectares.
