ULYANOVSK, May 16 (Itar-Tass) — The magistrate court of the Leninsky district of Ulyanovsk on Wednesday postponed, to May 25, the review of the criminal case against Left Front coordinator Sergei Udaltsov, who is accused of beating up a journalist.
The court met the petition by Udaltsov's lawyer, who said his client could not attend the hearing for health reasons, and also because of the fact that he was serving an administrative arrest in Moscow.
The coordinator has been charged with beating up an Ulyanovsk journalist during the sanctioned anti-NATO rally on April 21. Criminal proceedings against him were opened under Article 116, Part 1 /beating or use of violence causing physical pain/.
On May, 12, the magistrate court ruled on Udaltsov's reconduction after he failed to come to the previous hearing. His offered a medical certificate of illness as the excuse to stay away.
The court's decision was that the Opposition activist was deliberately avoiding the proceedings and ruled on reconduction at 08:00, Moscow time, on May 16.
On Tuesday, Udaltsov was discharged from hospital where he had been brought for medical supervision of his "dry hunger strike."
He is currently serving a 15-day administrative arrest for disobeying police during "indefinite remonstrative promenade." His lawyer Nikolai Polozov said his discharge might be explained by the need to convoy him to Ulyanovsk for the hearing.
