BANGKOK, May 14 (Itar-Tass) — Flight recorders from the crashed Sukhoi Superjet 100 passenger plane may be sent to Russia for deciphering if necessary, after they are retrieved from the bottom of a gorge on Mount Salak, Tatang Kurniadi, chief of the National Commission on Safety Transportation, said on Monday.
If the investigation decides it is necessary to use Russian technologies to decipher the data from flight recorders, they will be sent to Russia in accordance with international procedures, Kurniadi said.
However, first steps to obtain data from black boxes will be made in Indonesia, he stressed.
Meanwhile, a team of Indonesian rescuers, army and police officers is trying to recover the flight recorders from the bottom of a 500-meter-deep gorge. Rescuers can see an orange box measuring 50 to 60 centimeters, but cannot reach it as of yet.
Work continues in very difficult conditions, as difficult terrain and bad weather impede rescuers who use ropes to move on the slopes. Nevertheless, rescuers believe the flight recorders will be evacuated from the crash site already on Monday.
