Alcohol transportation in Russia to be monitored from space

A special automated system will be created for the purpose. It will cost over 97 million roubles

MOSCOW, May 12 (Itar-Tass) —— The federal service for the alcohol market regulation has prepared a draft government resolution to impose tight control over transportations of ethyl alcohol and alcohol-containing products.

A special automated system will be created for the purpose. It will cost over 97 million roubles. The funds are expected to be allocated from the country's budget, the Rossiiskaya Gazeta wrote on Saturday.

The document is placed in the Economic Development Ministry's official website for public consultations that will last till May 23.

The system will have information about transportations of alcohol and unpacked alcohol-containing products with ethyl alcohol content exceeding 25 percent.

The electronic data will be sent to the federal service through satellite navigation systems. Experts do not rule out that the GLONASS and GPS systems will be used.

For alcohol transportation, the organizer must report the route, stopover time and sites and where the freight is at any time. The information will be kept for five years.

At present, the alcohol transportation process is not controlled. Due to the fact to a certain extent, about 40 percent of alcohol on the Russian market is produced illegally, according to the centre for studies of federal and regional alcohol markets.

The idea to control the transportation was already put forth in the amendments to the law on state control over alcohol, which were passed last summer.

It is not the last document needed for the control system to work, agency press service official Alexander Kulikov noted.

However, none of the experts has said when the control system is expected to start working.
