MOSCOW, May 10 (Itar-Tass) — Moscow resolutely condemns the recent terrorist strikes in Syria, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday after a meeting between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, the president’s special envoy for the Middle East Affairs, and Syrian Ambassador to Moscow Riyadh Haddad. The meeting was held at the Syrian diplomat’s request.
“The sides discussed the recent events in Syria. Haddad confirmed that the Syrian authorities were committed to the principles of observation of the ceasefire regime and obligations deriving from the peace plan suggested by Kofi Annan, the U.N – Arab League envoy for Syria,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
The Syrian ambassador noted that Syrian leaders were promoting democratic transformations, including elections to the Syrian People’s Council (parliament) which were held on May 7 on a competitive and multi-party basis.
For his part, Mikhail Bogdanov confirmed that Russia’s stance was aimed at the earliest peaceful settlement to the internal Syrian crisis and gave positive assessment to the deployment of the United Nations ceasefire monitoring mission in Syria.
