Search helicopter sent for Superjet that disappears from radars

MOSCOW, May 9 (Itar-Tass) — A search helicopter was sent to track Russia’s plane Sukhoi Superjet 100 that disappeared from radars during its demonstration flight in Jakarta, Indonesia, a source close to the Russian delegation told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.

“The search helicopter has been sent, we are waiting for results,” the source said.

The United Aircraft Building Corporation confirmed that the plane disappeared from radars’ screens during its demonstration flight. There were 36 foreign passengers and a crew of eight Russian citizens.

The plane started its roadshow “Welcome Asia!” in the countries of Central and Southeast Asia. It has already made demonstration flights in Kazakhstan, Pakistan and Myanmar. It should fly to Laos and Vietnam.

Sukhoi Superjet 100 is a regional 100 seater developed by Russia’s Sukhoi Civil Aircraft with participation of Italy’s Alenia Aermacchi.

At present, Armenia’s Armavia and Russia’s flag carrier Aeroflot have eight Sukhoi Superjets in their fleet. As of the middle of April the civil aircraft made over 3,350 commercial flights during around 6,500 flight hours.

At present, Sukhoi Civil Aircraft has around 170 orders for its new plane.
