MOSCOW, May 9 (Itar-Tass) —— Moscow’s police detained about 200 opposition activists who tried to stage unauthorized actions in the city on Tuesday. A number of activists were detained more than once throughout the day, a spokesman for the Moscow police department said early on Wednesday.

In the majority of cases police actions were confined only to warnings and calls to stop unsanctioned actions. Activists were taken to police stations only in the event of recurring illegal actions, the spokesman noted.

“In all there were about 200 detentions, including recurrent ones. Some people ignored warnings and made recurrently attempted to take part in unauthorized action, thus violating public order,” the spokesman said.

On Monday, the police detained about 300 people. “The majority of those detained on Tuesday had been taken to police stations on Monday for violating public order,” the spokesman noted.
