MOSCOW, May 9 (Itar-Tass) —— About 30 opposition activists, including blogger Alexei Navalny, television anchorwoman Xenia Sobchak and lawmaker of the Russian State Duma lower parliament house Dmitry Gudkov, were detained near Pushkinskaya Square in downtown Moscow for an attempt to stage an unauthirised action, a spokesman for the Moscow police department said late on Tuesday.
“They will be taken to a police station to be brought to responsibility in line with the current law,” the spokesman said.
Prior to that, the police detained about 30 participants in ‘a public gathering’ near the Heroes of Plevna Monument in Moscow. The protesters then moved to Chistoprudny and Nikitsky Boulevards to hold an “open-ended public gathering.” The police were always there to stop the actions.
Opposition activist, blogger Alexei Navalny, was detained for the third time in the past two days. Moreover, the police detained popular TV hostess Xenia Sobchak, who said in her Twitter microblog that she “was just strolling down the street.”
“Frankly speaking, I never thought it might come that way. I have always been for peaceful protest,” she wrote.
