MOSCOW, May 8 (Itar-Tass) — Moscow City police have set free two activists of Russia's radical political opposition who were detained in the downtown park Tuesday morning, lawyer Violetta Volkova representing one of the detained activists, said.

The police detained blogger Alexei Navalny and the coordinator of the Left-Wing Front movement, Sergei Udaltsov, in a park near the Kitai Gorod metro station after they had spent the whole night at an open-air action near the monument to heroes of the Russian-Turkish war of 1878.

Sergei Udaltsov called the meeting in front of the momunent "a round-the-clock folk carnival with an indefinite time bracket."

The police took Navalny and Udaltsov to the Basmanny police department where they issued charges of encroachment on the regulations for organizing meetings, demonstrations, marches, and pickets. Under the provisions of the Code of Administrative Violations, each of them is facing a fine of slightly more than 30 U.S. dollars.

Participants in the 'folk carnival' spent the night sleeping on the asphalt , sang songs and had discussions with one another. MP Ilya Ponomaryov, who visited the site, said the action was actually an open-air meeting between voters and deputies of the State Duma, the lower house of parliament.

Before setting Navalny and Udaltsov free from the police department, the officers made them give recognizance to report to a justice court May 11.

Monday, a court of justice fined the two men for 1,000 rubles each for disobeying a policeman for the forceful actions they undertook at a Sunday rally of the opposition on Moscow's Bolotnaya Square.
