MOSCOW, May 7 (Itar-Tass) — Leaving the presidential office, Russian outgoing President Dmitry Medvedev thanked the nation for help and support and wished success to Vladimir Putin who took over the highest state post.

“Rounding up my work as head of state, I would like to say thanks to all who supported me for all these years. Thank you for the trust you showed, for your help and sympathy, for being with me,” Medvedev said on Monday at the inauguration ceremony of President Elect Vladimir Putin. “I would also like to say thanks to all Russia citizens. Thank you! We have still a lot to do,” he said.

Medvedev said he was glad his office will be taken over by Vladimir Putin, “an experienced man and a strong leader who has won support of the majority of citizens.”

“I wish Vladimir Putin success as president, in his endeavors for our country and our people,” Medvedev stressed.

Medvedev regards broad participation of citizens in the political life as one of the main achievements of his presidency. “I regard broad participation of citizens in the political life as one of my achievements; power itself has become more open for the dialogue,” he said.

The ex-president emphasized that “the state cannot work without taking into account retroactive contacts with society”.

Summing up the results, Medvedev noted that “we succeeded in doing much even during the global financial crisis”. “This work should be continued,” he stressed.
