MOSCOW, May 7 (Itar-Tass) — Vladimir Putin has been inaugurated as Russian President, chairman of Russia’s Supreme Court Valery Zorkin said after Putin took an oath and took over the presidential regalia from outgoing President Dmitry Medvedev.
It will be Putin’s third term in the presidential office. From 2000 to 2008, Putin was Russian President for two consecutive four-year terms. In 2008-2012, he was Russian prime minister. So, now he can be called Russia’s second and forth president.
Putin’s current office term will be six years after a relevant amendment to the Russian constitution was made. The amendment was decreed by President Dmitry Medvedev on December 30, 2008. The decree prolonged the term of president’s office from four to six years, and term of the State Duma lower parliament house from four to five years. Since the prolongation was not applicable to the incumbent president, Medvedev served a four-year term as Russian president.
