MOSCOW, May 5 (Itar-Tass) — Moscow calls for putting pressure on the Syrian opposition to implement the Kofi Annan plan on the peaceful settlement, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.

Commenting on Saturday’s telephone conversation between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.N./LAS Special Envoy Kofi Annan, the ministry said, “Kofi Annan informed Sergei Lavrov about the efforts aimed at achieving the peaceful settlement in Syria.”

“The parties praised the deployment of U.N. observers in Syria in compliance with U.N. Security Council Resolution 2043. Kofi Annan thanked Russia for contributing to its activity,” the ministry said. For his part, Lavrov said, “I want to stress the need to implement the special envoy’s plan by all Syrian parties – the authorities and the opposition”.

“Russia is cooperating with all parties. We will expect other countries, especially those that have necessary influence upon Syrian opposition groups, to act in the same key,” the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.

The Russian minister pointed to the inadmissibility of weapons contraband to Syria. “Contraband weapons supplies to Syria are inadmissible because they destabilize the situation in the country and in the entire region,” Lavrov said.

He stressed that Russia “will provide any support for the Kofi Annan mission in Syria”.
