Japan to shut down last nuclear reactor Friday

Before the Fukushima accident in March 2011 about 30 percent of the total electricity generated in Japan was supplied by nuclear power

TOKYO, May 5 (Itar-Tass) —— A year after the tsunami-triggered disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant Japan will shut down the only operating No 3 reactor at the Tomari plant in Hokkaido on Friday which will reduce the share of nuclear power to zero in the country.

Plant operator Hokkaido Electric Power Company said the reactor will be closed down for a regular checkup however none of the commercial reactors which underwent the procedure resumed operations as local governments demand additional security guarantees. Japan has 54 reactors and occupies the third place in the world.
