RF ForMin says Russian tourists in Egypt stay in resort zones

Eleven people were killed and over one hundred wounded

MOSCOW, May 3 (Itar-Tass) —— The Russian Foreign Ministry recommends to Russian tourists in Egypt to avoid areas where demonstrations and other mass actions take place and to stay within resort zones. The ministry stated this on Thursday in connection with the situation in Egypt.

There were clashes in Cairo on May 2 between peaceful protesters against the barring of a presidential candidate from the race and unidentified assailants. Eleven people were killed and over one hundred wounded.

“Moscow is concerned over the events in the friendly Egypt that caused loss of life,” the ministry noted. “We believe that issues on the current political agenda, including those connected with the presidential campaign, should be tackled by peaceful means only, in the field of law, with due ensurance by law enforcers of citizens’ security and lawful rights to freedom of assembly and expression of opinions.”

“Now that the period of transition is at the concluding stage, we believe it is utterly important to prevent outbreaks of violence and erosion of national accord reached by common effort regarding the program of political reforms whose completion must create the conditions for sustainable social and economic development of contemporary Egypt,” the ministry stressed.

Moscow hopes that all political forces of Egypt will show a responsible attitude, the required restraint and readiness to resolve arising problems through a dialogue aimed at achieving public unity for the sake of advancing vital reforms,” the ministry holds.
