State of emergency in area of oil spill on Angara River lifted

Around 300 tons of fuel leaked into the Angara because of an illegal connection to a local oil pipeline

IRKUTSK, May 2 (Itar-Tass) — An emergency regime, enforced in the towns of Cheremkhovo, Svrisk and in the Cheremkhovo region a week ago because of a leak of diesel fuel into the Angara river, has been lifted on Wednesday, Cheremkhovo mayor Vadim Semyonov told Itar-Tass.

A local commission for emergency situations which met in Svirsk on Wednesday passed a resolution that lifted the emergency regime. On Wednesday morning rescue teams managed to avert the oil spill, earlier detected 12 kilometers up the river, from contaminating the water intake area. Boom cordons built on the river barred the oil spill from the water intake zone, and the hazardous spill drifted past the protected zone.

Irkutsk Energy, Transport and Housing Minister Pyotr Voronin is confident that "no spill will ever pose a threat to a system of water supply to the region any more". Besides, water accumulating in the zone of water intake is purified as it flows through additional filters stuffed with carbon coal.

Around 300 tons of fuel leaked into the Angara on April 25 because of an illegal connection to a local oil pipeline. The three big settlements, populated by around 77,500, facing a threat of oil spill had no water supply for almost a week. The Cheremkhovsky water intake zone resumed normal functions on Tuesday; heat supply to the town of Svirsk was resumed on Wednesday morning.
