KIEV, April 27 (Itar-Tass) — The Ukrainian media published on Friday photographs of bruises of ex-Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko and an expert opinion. Online editions said they received the photos from Ukrainian Human Rights Ombudsman Nina Karpacheva.
The photographs taken on April 25 show bruises on Timoshenko’s wrists, a forearm, an elbow and the belly. Experts confirmed the injures.
The materials were also presented at Karpacheva’s meeting with Western diplomats. According to unofficial reports, head of the European Union delegation to Ukraine Jose Manuel Pinto Teixeira and representatives of 27 EU embassies attended the meeting. The diplomats have declined to make comment.
Timoshenko went on a hunger strike on April 20 after personnel of the Kharkov penitentiary used force against her during the transfer to the hospital.
Timoshenko is serving a seven-year-term in Kharkov. The court sentenced her on October 11, 2011, for exceeding her authority in the signing of the gas contracts with Russia in 2009. She was also compelled to pay 1.51 billion hryvni (almost $200 million) to Neftegaz Ukrainy.
A new case against her was opened on October 13, 2011, for writing off the debt of the United Energy Systems of Ukraine private corporation to the Russian Defense Ministry worth $405,500,000 to the state budget of Ukraine, while being the corporation president, under conspiracy with other former Prime Minister Pavel Lazarenko.
