RF makes active efforts to help settle situation in Sudan

Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Karti will visit Moscow on April 30 to discuss the situation

MOSCOW, April 26 (Itar-Tass) — Russia makes active mediatory efforts to help settle the situation between Sudan and South Sudan, Russian president’s Middle East envoy Mikhail Bogdanov said on Thursday. Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Karti will visit Moscow on April 30 to discuss the situation.

“In a few days, we are expecting in Moscow the foreign minister of Sudan, who will hold consultations with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov,” said Bogdanov, who is Deputy Foreign Minister. “We agreed with our Sudanese partners today that this visit will take place on April 30,” he added.

“The Sudanese foreign minister will visit Moscow next week over growing tensions between Khartoum and Juba. He will have negotiations with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said earlier on Thursday.

“Our position is well known, we defend it in the UN Security Council, which issued a statement of the chairman on April 12, formulating the demands of the international community to both Sudanese sides. But the situation remains quite tense there,” the diplomat said.

Sudan and its neighboring country – the Republic of South Sudan are officially in the state of war. Juba insists that the territory of the disputable district Heglig, where about 50% of all Sudanese oil (about 115,000 barrels daily) is produced, is an integral part of South Sudan. Meanwhile, “Khartoum is fully determined to confront the aggression,” the spokesman of the Sudanese Foreign Ministry said.
