MOSCOW, April 26 (Itar-Tass) — President Medvedev has declared that Ulyanovsk (city on the Volga river) will be neither NATO base nor grounds "to hop" from.
"This is no site to hop from. This is merely a possibility to help the peacekeeping contingents carry out the mission which continues in Afghanistan," outgoing President Medvedev said in an interview to Russian TV channels on Thursday.
Both Russia and NATO are interested in Afghanistan being a peaceful state posing no threat and with less terrorism, Medvedev said. He admitted that the positions of NATO and Russia often differ, "but as far as Afghanistan is concerned we have always supported the peacekeeping operation and will continue to support it," Medvedev stressed.
"No NATO servicemen or civilians will ever step in Ulyanovsk; it will be a merely technical operation," Medvedev assured.
"The talk about "a NATO base" in Ulyanovsk was used by certain political forces in their own interests, Medvededv noted. Certain political forces in the United States do the same when flaring up anti-Russian sentiments," Medvedev said.
