MOSCOW, April 26 (Itar-Tass) —— Moscow will stop using hundreds of thousands of labour migrants and will develop its own production capabilities, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said.
“Obviously, the conditions of economic development in Moscow have changed if not dramatically ten certainly significantly from previous years,” he said.
The mayor noted that “in previous years the bulk of economic growth in the city was generated by more jobs as 100,000-150,000 new jobs we created in the city every year, and these jobs were held by non-Muscovites because the city has no such labour resources, and they were held by labour migrants, including those from the near abroad”.
“Such economic development and such trend cannot last forever as it will have a number of negative consequences, both transport and social,” he added.
Sobyanin stressed that the city would focus on better labour efficiency and the development of high-tech and innovation sectors, healthcare, education, tourism and other industries.
“We should follow the path used by the majority of cities in the world,” he said.
