United Russia congress to be held in working format

Regional conferences for the nomination of delegates will be held soon

MOSCOW, April 25 (Itar-Tass) —— The United Russia Party will hold its congress in the working format on May 26, First Deputy Secretary of the United Russia General Council presidium Sergei Zheleznyak told reporters on Wednesday.

“The congress will not be minor, as there will be many delegates, but this will not be a format of the pre-election congress, this will be a reporting and party election congress,” he said, assuring that a proper venue for the congress will be found.

The United Russia General Council presidium launched the preparations to the forum, which was decided to hold in Moscow on May 26. High on the agenda is the election of the party chairman and its priority tasks.

“The congress will consider all issues, which are related to some changes in the charter, powers and makeup of the governing bodies,” Zheleznyak pointed out. “Such proposals are being discussed,” he said, adding that “the changes will certainly be essential.”

The reshuffles will be made depending on structural changes in the governing bodies of the party, moreover, on all levels, including regional level, he noted. Regional conferences for the nomination of delegates will be held soon.

For his part, a member of the United Russia General Council presidium Franz Klintsevich told reporters that Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev are expected to participate in the congress on May 26.

On Tuesday at the meeting with the leadership of the party Putin noted that after his inauguration on May 7 he intends to quit the post of the party chairman, which the latter occupies since the spring of 2008. He also offered to hold a congress in the second half of May and to elect a new United Russia chairman at the congress. He offered Dmitry Medvedev on this post, as the latter headed the United Russia party list at the State Duma elections in December 2011.
