State Duma to discuss premier's candidacy on May 8

MOSCOW, April 23 (Itar-Tass) — The State Duma lower house of the Russian parliament will meet on May 8 to discuss the candidacy of prime minister, house speaker Sergei Naryshkin stated on Monday.

"Immediately after the inauguration, the president-elect should present the candidacy for prime minister on May 7," Naryshkin said.

"In this connection, a meeting between the leaders of the parliament’s factions took place. They reached an accord to hold consultations with the parliament factions over the proposed candidacy for the post of prime minister on May 7 and May 8, so that the house could meet on May 8 and consider the issue of approving it," the speaker confirmed.

Last Friday, a motion was brought forward to hold an extra session on May 8. According to the text of the draft resolution, the lawmakers will have to gather for a plenary meeting on May 8, which is a day off in Russia, at 15:00, Moscow time.

Under the Constitution, the candidacy of prime minister, proposed by the president, has to be approved by the State Duma.

Earlier, president-elect Vladimir Putin repeatedly stated he would propose acting head of state Dmitry Medvedev for prime minister.
