Ulyanovsk police verifying statement of opposition’s Sergei Udaltsov

The regional clinical center said the journalist had a brain injury, a concussion, bruises on the head and the left forearm

ULYANOVSK, April 22 (Itar-Tass) —— The Ulyanovsk police are verifying a statement of the opposition’s Sergei Udaltsov, who has accused a local journalist of a deliberately false allegation, Ulyanovsk regional police deputy spokesman Alexei Ryzhkov said.

He said Udaltsov filed his statement in the presence of a lawyer on Sunday. “Counter claims are a normal practice, a standard situation,” he added.

Udaltsov will have to prove his statement with evidence, Ryzhkov said.

A free lance reporter of an Ulyanovsk media outlet claimed she was beaten in the anti-NATO rally on the 30th Victory Anniversary Square in the Ulyanovsk Leninsky district on April 21. She said she was attacked by Udaltsov during an interview after people around him said she was a Young Guard supporter.

Doctors confirmed the beating. The regional clinical center said the journalist had a brain injury, a concussion, bruises on the head and the left forearm. The police suspected Udaltsov of violence (Part 1, Article 116 of the Russian Criminal Code). That is a civil offense, which means the journalist needs to file a statement at a magistrate court, Ryzhkov said.
