Spring floods in Ryazan Region inundate nearly 1,000 homes

Nearly 130 people, using 53 units of machinery (including speed boats) are fighting the floods

MOSCOW, April 22 (Itar-Tass) — Spring floods in the Ryazan Region already inundated nearly 1,000 dwelling houses. Over 300 people were evacuated to safe places, Itar-Tass learnt at the press service of the regional branch of the Russian Ministry for Emergencies.

“The water level rose in the inundation zone in the town of Kadom, totaling 797 cm. As a result, 934 houses with a population of 2,600 were flooded,” a source said.

To evacuate people, authorities prepared 11 temporary centres with the total accommodation for 2,130 people – these are the Kadom central district hospital and the House of Children’s Creative Activities, a kindergarten, a dormitory of the Kadom technological secondary school and the House of Culture.

“A total of 311 people were evacuated; 11 of them were accommodated at the Kadom central hospital, while 300 live with their relatives. Remaining residents refused to be evacuated,” specified the regional branch.

Nearly 130 people, using 53 units of machinery (including speed boats) are fighting the floods.

Work to reinforce banks is conducted at the most dangerous areas. Rescuers bring water and foodstuffs at requests of residents. The operation of social sphere facilities and shops has not been disrupted,” the press service emphasized.

The inundation situation in the Ryazan Region deteriorated on Saturday.
