Russia opposes new sanctions against North Korea

The response of the UN Security Council should be proportionate

MOSCOW, April 13 (Itar-Tass) —— Russia opposes new sanctions against North Korea over the launch of a rocket, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday.

“We do not believe in new sanctions. They will bring nothing,” the minister said.

“We believe that the violation of the UN Security Council resolution requires so that the UN Security Council will debate the current situation,” he noted. “The response of the UN Security Council should be proportionate,” Lavrov said. “The UN Security Council should take its duties with responsibility and take decisions, which will give a principal assessment to the event,” the Russian foreign minister said.

Meanwhile, the Russian minister urged North Korea “to avoid actions, which are leading to the escalation of tensions on the Korean Peninsula.”

“Certainly we regret about the launch of a rocket despite insistent appeals of the international community not to do it. Luckily the abortive launch did not result in the damages for other countries,” the minister underlined.
