MOSCOW, April 4 (Itar-Tass) ——The federal target programme “Lake Baikal Protection” and socio-economic development of the Baikal natural area in 2012-2020 requires 57.7 billion roubles in investments, the Ministry of Natural Resources said on Wednesday, April 4.
The programme calls for cleaning up the Baikal area, protecting forests, upgrading utilities and taking other measures. As a result of these measures, the flow of waste into the lake by 2020 should decrease by 70 percent from the 2010 level, and 80 percent of the Baikal natural territory affected by severe pollution will be rehabilitated.
The programme will also make it possible to increase the population of valuable fish species in Lake Baikal by 40 percent.
