Experts concerned over high rates of cyber crime in Russia

In 2011 Moscow police for cyber crime solved more than 70 Internet crimes

MOSCOW, April 4 (Itar-Tass) — International experts have evaluated the economic losses inflicted on the world by cyber crime at around 200 billion roubles, with Russia accounting approximately for one-fourth (50- 60 million roubles) of the overall losses.

The losses inflicted by such crimes (Internet fraud) were evaluated at more than 200 billion roubles, with the Russian segment accounting for more than 50-60 billion roubles, the spokesperson of the Economic Crimes Department of Internal Affairs of Moscow, Philip Zolotnitsky told a press conference on Wednesday.

In 2011 Moscow police for cyber crime solved more than 70 Internet crimes, with economic crimes accounting for 90 percent of these crimes, Zolotnitsky said.

Earlier, most of the cyber crime had been linked to manipulations with banking cards, whereas last year Internet banking crimes prevailed in the cyber crime statistics, he said. The losses inflicted by cyber hackers who steal money, breaking into banking computer programs, were estimated at dozens of millions of roubles, Zolotnitsky said. He particularly dwelt on SMS manipulations, which persuade people easy to deceive to send an" SMS" to a certain " short" number, as result of which the criminals appropriate money from the accounts of their deceived SMS correspondents.
