Court rejects Lebedev’s suit against his illegal custody

Liptser said she considered this verdict illegal and planned to appeal against it to the Moscow City Court

MOSCOW, April 2 (Itar-Tass) — Moscow’s Tverskoy court has rejected a suit by former MENATEP head Platon Lebedev, who claimed his three-month detention in custody in 2010 was illegal.

He filed the claim to Russia’s Finance Ministry, which serves as defendant under the effective laws.

“The court defeated our claim, but motives of this decision have not been known yet, as only a judicial disposition was made public,” Lebedev’s lawyer Elena Liptser told Itar-Tass noting that a declaration will be made within the upcoming days.

Liptser said she considered this verdict illegal and planned to appeal against it to the Moscow City Court.

Earlier Russia’s Supreme Court ruled that the latest extension of arrest for ex-YUKOS CEO Mikhail Khodorkovsky and MENATEP head Platon Lebedev was illegal.

On December 30, 2010 Moscow’s Khamovnichesky court sentenced Khodorkovsky and Lebedev to 14 years in prison in a second case for embezzling oil and money laundering. The two businessmen and their lawyers appealed against this verdict and the Moscow City Court reduced their sentence by one year. They will be released in 2016.
