KIEV, April 2 (Itar-Tass) —— Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka has ordered to offer medical treatment to former Prime Minister and leader of the opposition Batkivshchina party Yulia Timoshenko outside the Kachanovskaya penitentiary, the press service of the prosecutor general’s office said on Monday.
According to the press service, Pshonka instructed the State Penitentiary Service and the Ministry of Healthcare to “take measures under the existing laws to have Timoshenko examined and treated at a specialized medical establishment outside the Kachanovskaya penitentiary.”
Late last week, Ukraine’s First Deputy Prosecutor General Renat Kuzmin said that Kiev was looking at a possible treatment course for the former prime minister in Germany. “We are ready for a constructive dialogue and the search for a compromise solution,” he then said.
He urged not to use the policy of double standards in Timoshenko’s treatment issue. “If we are speaking about the non-use of double standards, we must put it upright: there are many prisoners with such diseases as Timoshenko’s. Is this a privileged approach? Or should tycoon Timoshenko receive treatment in a best clinic in Germany, while poor Ukrainian convicts are treated at penitentiaries. Is it fair?” Kuzmin said. “About 150 Kachanovskaya prisoners have the disease Timoshenko is suffering from, some of them are asking whether they can go for treatment courses to Germany together with Timoshenko. If the German clinic is ready to admit all Ukrainian prisoners for treatment, the situation will be settled,” Kuzmin said and pledged that Timoshenko will not be forced to participate in new court sessions, if her health does not permit this. “If she is sick, no one will bring her to the court, she will receive treatment, even probably outside the Kachanovskaya penitentiary,” the first deputy prosecutor general remarked.
German doctors took part in the medical examination of Timoshenko. They recommended to treat her outside the penitentiary. The Ukrainian Penitentiary Service claims that Timoshenko refuses from treatment at Ukrainian hospitals.
