ULAN-UDE, March 30 (Itar-Tass) — All the major taiga fires in the Zakamensky district bordering Mongolia have been localised in Buryatia. “A state of emergency is in effect in the municipality since March 28, and two large fire spots at an area of ··200 hectares each are being extinguished now,” the republic’s Forestry Agency told Itar-Tass on Friday.

According to the agency, a total of 10 fire spots at an area of almost 340 hectares were liquidated on Thursday.

“In addition to the localised fires, there is still one active fire at an area of ··20 hectares,” the agency’s press secretary Alexandra Yegorova specified. “About 100 people - employees of the forest protection service and local residents are engaged in the fire fighting efforts. Smoke-jumpers have been sent to the Selenga and Zakamensk districts of Buryatia.”

Since the beginning of spring, 29 wildfires at a total area of 1,300 hectares have already been registered in Buryatia.
