BRICS summit opens in New Delhi

NEW DELHI, March 29 (Itar-Tass) —— The BRICS summit opened here on Thursday. The leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are having a meeting in the narrow format. High on the agenda of the summit is global governance, the BRICS role in sustainable development and the BRICS participation in the IMF programs.

“Russia hopes that the summit will take some decisions, which can exert a tangible positive influence on the development of financial and economic and international and political situation, build up the BRICS positions in the world and promoted our cooperation in various spheres,” Russian Presidential Aide Sergei Prikhodko told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.

Among Russian priorities at the summit he named “a profound analysis of the situation in world economy and finances, the coordination of the positions of the BRICS states before a G-20 summit in Mexico in June.” Meanwhile, Russia is interested in “the IMF reform and the debates on the scale and conditions of the probable participation of the BRICS states in replenishing IMF financial resources, the synchronization on the most pressing international and political issues (the situation in Syria and over the country, the situation over Iran), problems of energy security.”

Prikhodko noted that India, which is currently presiding in the BRICS, put for debates two groups of issues. The first one concerns the problems of global governance. “The leaders will exchange views on the situation in the world economy, the reforms of the institutes of global governance and the problems of international stability and security,” the Kremlin official noted.

The second issue for debates is the BRICS role in the sustainable development. The summiteers are expected to discuss the Indian idea to establish a bank of development South-South and prepare to the UN conferences on sustainable development and biological diversity, which will be held in Brazil and India this year, the fulfilment of the Millennium Development Goals and the prospects of the Doha round of negotiations within the World Trade Organization,” Prikhodko said.

The New Delhi declaration will be made public after the summit. “The declaration is not signed, but approved, the document is written only in English,” the Russian presidential aide explained.
