NALCHIK, March 27 (Itar-Tass) —— A gunman is killed in the special operation in a private house in Nalchik, a source of the Russian Investigation Committee's department in Kabardino-Balkaria told Itar-Tass.
The body was found badly burnt after a fire broke out in the house. The identity of the man has yet to be established. Sappers are working at the site, the source said.
Earlier, law-enforcement sources said the man might be one of the republic's underground gunmen leaders.
The fire broke out in the house after the gunman threw a grenade at the cordon. Some time later, an explosion also went off in the cordoned house. According to neighbours, a man, aged about 30, resided in the house.
The special operation was launched at about 03:00 Moscow time on Tuesday, after fighting when law-enforcement officers attempted to enter the house. The counterterrorist operation regime was imposed in the area. Law-enforcement services evacuated residents from the nearby buildings and disconnected the housing supply systems.
None in the law-enforcement force and among local residents was hurt, a source at the operational headquarters of the National Anti-Terrorism Committee in Kabardino-Balkaria said.
