Rosatom chief hopes first unit of Kudankulam to be in service soon

MOSCOW, March 23 (Itar-Tass) —— The head of Russia’s Rosatom corporation, Sergei Kiriyenko, hopes that the first unit of India’s nuclear power plant at Kudankulam will be commissioned soon. He shared his expectations at a news briefing on the eve of a world forum on nuclear safety.

“I do hope that the launch will take place in the near future,” Kiriyenko said. Russia was prepared to do that back last year, but the date was eventually shifted to this year “due to political debate inside India.”

Kiriyenko said he was satisfied the discussions were over at last.

The government of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, where the Kudankulam NPP is being built, made a decision on March 19 to resume construction work.

Protests by the critics of nuclear power last September postponed the launch of Kudankulam for two months. In the middle of October the protests resumed and the demonstrators blocked all approaches to the construction site, letting in no engineers or builders. The state government made a decision to suspend construction until the moment the people’s fears over the NPP’s safety have been shattered.
