PARIS, March 23 (Itar-Tass) —— The Syrian opposition dismissed on Thursday the UN Security Council statement as not meeting the needs of the Syrian people.

Burhan Ghalioun, the chief of the opposition Syrian National Council, told AFP in Paris "this statement has the merit of representing the common position of the international community against the policies of Bashar al-Assad. But it obviously does not meet the real needs of the Syrian people."

The Security Council statement urged Assad and the opposition to implement "fully and immediately" international envoy Kofi Annan's peace plan.
