MOSCOW, March 22 (Itar-Tass) — Russia does not consider Iran its enemy, but it is against Iran coming into possession of nuclear missiles, Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said at a briefing on Thursday commenting on the situation around Iran’s nuclear program.
“We don’t consider Iran our enemy, Iran is our neighbor. We believe it is necessary to treat one’s neighbors carefully and be considerate to them,” he said.
However, Antonov reminded the briefing with military diplomats that “the Russian president has unequivocally and repeatedly said that we are against the wreckage of the non-proliferation regime”.
“Russia is not interested in the emergence of new nuclear missile threats on the perimeter of its borders. This is a fundamental stance of Russia, and this is a matter of principle for us,” the deputy defense minister said.
