Accession to CIS Customs Union to contravene Ukraine’s Constitution

“However, we’re moving along the path of European integration,” he said

KIEV, March 21 (Itar-Tass) — Ukraine’s accession to the CIS Customs Union, which currently embraces Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, would run counter to the national Constitution, President Viktor Yanukovich said Wednesday as he met with the heads of Churches and religious organizations represented in this country.

“Ukraine doesn’t have the right to join the organizations that have supra-national regulatory agencies,” he said. “This is to say, we don’t have the right under the Constitution to delegate a part of our sovereignty to anyone.”

“If we need to join the Customs Union someday, we’ll have to amend the Constitution or to organize a national referendum,” Yanukovich said, adding that the same concern this country’s accession to the European Union, too.

“However, we’re moving along the path of European integration,” he said.
