BERLIN, March 21 (Itar-Tass) — Russia does not defend the regime of Bashar al-Assad, but Russia prevents the U.N. Security Council from taking unrealistic decisions, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

After a tripartite meeting with German and Polish Foreign Ministers, Guido Westerwelle and Radoslaw Sikorski, on Wednesday, Lavrov said, “We put forth two variants of the resolution, which had not been upheld by our Western partners, primarily by the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council.”

“They insisted the resolution include an ultimatum and threats to the al-Assad government to unilaterally make the Syrian president to withdraw his units. We opposed these resolutions. We did not defend the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, but we prevented the U.N. Security Council from taking unrealistic decisions,” the Russian minister said.

“I’m very glad that our colleagues gave up ultimatums and threats, as well as attempts to solve the problem by unilateral requirements towards the Syrian government,” he added.
