Five policemen suspected of involvement in the rape were arrested

KAZAN, March 21 (Itar-Tass) — Former Chief of Dalny territorial police department in Kazan Ilshat Garifullin has been placed under arrest as a suspect in a criminal case opened into an incident of violence used against a suspect detained, the Kazan district city court ruled on Wednesday, according to the court press service.

The court has satisfied an appeal filed by the investigation and ordered to put the former policeman under arrest for two months, the press service said. According to a decision made by a previous court panel on March 13 Garifullin was placed under house arrest. Now, the resolution on the criminal case has been revised by a different court panel, the press service said.

Chief of the Russian Investigation Committee Alexander Bastrykin, who arrived in Kazan on Wednesday, has been studying the investigation's accounts about the progress of the investigation into the activity of Dalny police implicated in abuse of office. Bastrykin is to look into an account of Chief of Tatarstan's SK investigative department Pavel Nikolayev and the accounts of other investigative departments where facts of abuse were registered.

An investigation into the incident of abuse of office at the Dalny police department in Kazan was opened after 52-year-old Sergei Nazarov, detained on theft charges, died in hospital. Nazarov said before death that five policemen, who had detained him on suspicion of theft, raped him with a champagne bottle.Five policemen suspected of involvement in the rape were arrested.

Over the past 24 hours, 28 citizens have lodged complaints about illegal methods used by workers of Kazan police while a group of investigators, including experts of SK central apparatus, are continuing the checks.

The Kazan Volga district court has sanctioned the arrest of former Chief of Dalny Criminal Investigation department Ainur Rakhmatillin and a detective, Amir Sharifullin.
