SEOUL, March 21 (Itar-Tass) — The main goal of a nuclear security summit that will be held here from March 26 to 27 is to prevent nuclear terrorism, to maintain peace and ensure the safety of seven billion people around the world and generations to come, President Lee Myung-bak of the Republic of Korea (ROK) has told Itar-Tass and the South Korean newspaper JoongAng Ilbo in a joint interview on Wednesday.
The importance of nuclear security, he said, came to the fore following terrorist attacks in the USA on September 11, 2001. "When terrorists indiscriminately attack the workplaces of civilians, the difference between a batlefield and a deep rear area disappears. Out of all kinds of terrorism, nuclear one is seen as the most terrible," the ROK President pointed out.
The chief result of the Seoul summit must be the emergence of a specific Action Plan to determine ways for the joint activities of countries in enhancing control over radioactive materials and preventing their unlawful prolifearation, he said.
Touching upon key nuclear security measures, Lee Myung-bak also mentioned the need "to reduce world stockpiles of weapon-grade nuclear materials down to a level that would not allow their use by terrorists".
Besides, he considers it necessary to introduce an international cooperation system envisaging efforts to spot and track the movement of nuclear materials and enhance safety measures in handling nuclear wastes within the scope of all-embracig struggle against illegal proliferation of nuclear and radiactive substances.
