CARACAS, March 20 (Itar-Tass) – Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez said Monday he has information suggesting that an attempt at the life of his contender in the forthcoming presidential election, Henrique Capriles, is being plotted.
He said it in an interview with Venezuelan television.
“The head of our intelligence service has had a meeting with the team of the Governor of Miranda State, Henrique Capriles, since we have the data on an assassination being plotted,” Chavez said. “Naturally, it isn’t the government that’s plotting it, the real situation is quite the opposite.”
Governor Capriles will be Chavez’s contender in the presidential election scheduled for October 7.
Current opinion polls indicate that Chavez might get some 52% votes and Capriles, 34% if the election were held at the beginning of March.
