Ingushetia marks 242nd anniversary of unification with Russia

NAZRAN, the Republic of Ingushetia, March 18 (Itar-Tass) — Ingushetia marked the 242nd anniversary of its unification with Russia on Saturday.

A roundtable meeting devoted to the anniversary took place in Nazran. Museums are featuring thematic exhibitions. Newspapers and magazines published historical materials while television channels prepared special programs devoted to the historical date. Schools and higher educational establishments organized lectures titled: “Relations between Russia and Ingushetia in the 18th century”.

Artists and dancers gave concerts in Ingush cities and villages. Sport competitions were held as part of the festivities.

“On March 17-19, 1770 the Ingush people signed a treaty with Russia on voluntary accession to the Russian Empire. The people of Ingushetia made a wise choice that started a new era in the history of the Ingush people,” Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, the president of Ingushetia, said in his address to the republic’s population.

Yevkurov emphasized that over the years that passed the people of Ingushetia had proven that they valued their unity with Russia. Ingushetia was Russia’s stronghold in the region and a reliable friend of the Russian people. Ingushetia wrote down many glorious chapters in the history of the Russian state. Alongside with other peoples of Russia, the Ingush fought in the Russian-Turkish and Russian-Japanese wars as well as in the First and Second World Wars.
