MOSCOW, March 18 (Itar-Tass) — The Russian Interior Ministry will inspect police work in Tatarstan, following the tragic death of detainee Sergei Nazarov at a police station in Kazan.
Alexander Bastrykin, the chairman of the Russian Investigation Committee, is travelling to Kazan to hear reports on investigation of high-profile criminal cases against policemen. “The chairman of the Investigation Committee will go on a working trip to the Republic of Tatarstan on Wednesday, March 21. He will hold several meetings and hear reports of an investigative group on investigation of criminal cases against policemen who had committed misdemeanor in office, “Vladimir Markin, a spokesperson of the Russian Investigation Committee, told Itar-Tass.
Pavel Nikolayev, the head of the investigative department of the Russian Investigation Committee for the Republic of Tatarstan, will report on incidents of power abuse by policemen to Bastrykin.
Alexander Bastrykin will have personal meetings with citizens.
Sergei Nazarov, 52, died in hospital after being detained by policemen from the Dalniy police station in Kazan. After that, more cases of power abuse by policemen were reported. Criminal proceedings were initiated.
On March 15, Russian Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev held an extraordinary meeting of the Ministry’s board to discuss the situation in Kazan.
