MOSCOW, March 17 (Itar-Tass) —— The criminal case, opened in Kazan against a group of police suspected of responsibility for the death of a detainee, has been handed over to the chief investigation department of the Investigation Committee, IC spokesman Vladimir Markin told Itar-Tass.
“For the purpose of full and impartial investigation of the criminal case against the suspected police personnel the IC leadership has made a decision to appoint special investigator Timofei Shirokov in charge of the affair,” Markin said.
IC chief Alexander Bastrykin has dispatched a large group of IC officials under senior investigator, Major-General Sharan Elsultanov.
“The panel of inquiry will be receiving other citizens in Kazan who may have suffered from police abuse. The commission will be making procedural decisions on the basis of such complaints,” Markin said.
“Also, the commission will be looking into complaints about action or inaction by the staff of Tatarstan’s investigation department, who refused to open criminal cases over police abuse,” he said.
The commission will ensure full, impartial and legal investigation of criminal cases against police.
“Investigation Committee chief Alexander Bastrykin is scheduled to arrive in Kazan shortly,” Markin said.
