MOSCOW, March 16 (Itar-Tass) — Members of the State Duma lower house of Russia’s parliament on Friday welcomed the election of the president of Moldova.

Chairman of the Duma committee on CIS affairs and relations with compatriots Leonid Slutsky said that “Moldova today has finally officially ended a long-term government crisis.” “Moldova is the world’s only republic which has lived so long without a president,” he stressed.

At the same time he called the newly elected president of Moldova a “compromise figure.” “Nicolae Timofti, undoubtedly, is a professional. We hope that with his taking office the Russian-Moldovan relations will be only strengthening, and such a sensitive issue as the Dniester Region settlement will also find its settlement format,” he concluded.

Chairman of the Superior Council of Magistrates Nicolae Timofti has been elected President of Moldova. His candidacy was supported by 62 out of 101 parliamentarians, Chairman of the Presidential Election Commission Tudor Deliu said. The faction of the opposition Party of Communists boycotted the election. The Communists had repeatedly blocked attempts by the ruling coalition to gather sufficient votes to elect a president. But in recent weeks three Communist members of parliament defected to the ruling coalition.

Since 2009, Moldova has been unable to elect its president. Several previous attempts to elect a president failed because neither of candidates managed to win votes enough.
