MOSCOW, March 15 (Itar-Tass) — Russia upholds the activity by Kofi Annan as U.N./LAS special representative for Syria, the Foreign Ministry reported.
Commenting on the results of Thursday’s telephone conversation between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Annan, the ministry said Russia was ready to continue making active contribution to the U.N./LAS special envoy.
“The U.N./LAS special representative informed the Russian foreign minister about his work with all parties in order to work out mutually acceptable modalities of the political settlement in Syria. Lavrov provided support for Annan’s activity. The Russian minister said the country would make him active contribution,” the ministry said.
Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said Russia considered important Annan’s proposals on the settlement of the crisis in Syria and supported his mission. “U.N. Special Representative Kofi Annan has put forth new proposals and he is holding intensive consultations with the parties involved in the conflict,” Gatilov said in his Twitter blog.
Last weekend Annan gave Syrian President Bashar al-Assad “concrete proposals” on ceasing violence in the country. Syria has responded, but the details are not available yet.
