BRUSSELS, March 12 (Itar-Tass) —— NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said he was shocked by a shooting spree in the Afghan province of Qandahar where a U.S. soldier killed sixteen civilians.

“I want to express my shock and sadness at the tragic shooting incident in Qandahar province, where it is reported that several people, including women and children, have been killed or wounded,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

“I offer my heartfelt condolences and sympathy to their families and loved ones, and to the Afghan people and government.”

Rasmussen said he supports the commitment of General John Allen, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, who pledged a "rapid and thorough investigation”.

“We remain firmly committed to our mission of building a strong and stable Afghanistan, together with our Afghan partners,” Rasmussen said.
