McCain’s appeal for airstrikes on Syria contradicts international law

State Duma official believes that John McCain is a politician of extremely reactionary views, which go beyond permissible limits in international relations

MOSCOW, March 6 (Itar-Tass) —— John McCain is a politician of extremely reactionary views, which go beyond permissible limits in international relations, State Duma International Relations Committee First Deputy Chairman, Presidential Envoy for CIS Affairs Konstantin Kosachyov said on Tuesday.

“McCain's statement is a provocative act,” he said, referring to the opinion of the Republican Senator that the U.S. should launch military airstrikes against Syrian President Bashar Asad's regime.

The Senator “proposed a combat operation against a sovereign state, which is not under sanctions or resolutions of the UN Security Council,” Kosachyov remarked.

Even the draft resolutions, which were offered for approval at the UN Security Counci,l but not enacted, did not permit the use of military force, he said.

“In this case McCain disagrees both with the international law and with the position of the international community, including the United States and other world leaders. This is proof that McCain is a politician of extremely radical reactionary views, which go beyond permissible limits in international relations now and again,” he said.

Alas, all countries, among them Russia, have politicians of the McCain type, Kosachyov remarked. “We all know them. McCain’s belonging to this group has long stopped being a secret,” he said.

“Hopefully, this proposal is a personal viewpoint of McCain,” Kosachyov added.
