NOVO-OGARYOVO, March 2 (Itar-Tass) —— Russian Prime Minister and presidential hopeful Vladimir Putin played down opposition fears he would tighten the political system in case he wins the March 4 presidential election.
“Why should I do it? On the contrary, President (Dmitry) Medvedev submitted a package of lawbills that liberalize our political system and allows to create parties with lower membership requirements,” he told foreign editors late on Thursday.
“I do not know why such fears originate. We are doing it vice versa. We do no plan anything like that. All our proposals aim at promoting a dialogue with those who support us and who criticize us,” Putin said.
However Putin said he would not meet demands to hold an early parliamentary election because the opposition considers the December poll unfair.
“No, there is the election time stipulated by legislation,” he said.
