VLADIVOSTOK, February 29 (Itar-Tass) — Vladimir Miklushevsky, acting Governor of the Primorsky (maritime) Territory (PT), has told the local media in an interview on Wednesday that he aims mainly to decriminalize the region and raise the population's trust in authorities.
Miklushevsky said these tasks can be accomplished "by rendering the authorities transparent and open to society, and do that with the media's help as well". He said, "My paramount task is to secure the participation of civil society institutions in working with this end in view in conjunction with the PT administration".
"In order to attain this end, I intend to introduce changes to the PT administration pattern so as to make it more compact and more effective and directed primarily to addressing the people's needs," Miklushevsky said. He did not rule it out that new people would come to the administration. They "must be professionals who have gained a no-nonsense managerial experience. Also welcome are people who take a somewhat different view of life and adhere to a sufficienty modern view of how to settle the present-day problems".
This past Tuesday, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree terminating the powers of PT Governor Sergei Darkin. The President accepted the Governor's resignation at his own request, and appointed Vladimir Miklushevsky, rector of the Far Eastern Federal University, to be acting Governor of the PT pending the assumption of office by a person who will be vested with gubernatoria powers..
