Russia's veto gives Syria a chance to determine its own destiny

The stances of Russia and China during the vote on the Syrian resolution at the U.N. Security Council gave Syrian people an opportunity to determine their own destiny

PERESLAVL-ZALESSKY (Yaroslavl region), February 24 (Itar-Tass) — The stances of Russia and China during the vote on the Syrian resolution at the U.N. Security Council gave Syrian people an opportunity to determine their own destiny, Syrian Ambassador to Russia Riyad Haddad said on Friday at an All-Russia congress of veterans who did their military service in Syria.

“Taking advantage of its right of veto to preserve Syria’s integrity and independence, Russia has given Syrian people an opportunity to choose themselves the political standard of life that they consider necessary, ruling out all kinds of pressure and threats that bring tension and instability into the region,” the diplomat stressed.

“Russia’s active role on the international arena will benefit the whole international community that needs the replacement of the use of force approach with principles of justice and equality as never before,” the ambassador emphasized. “Russia supports independence of all countries and prevents interference in their domestic affairs,” Riyad Haddad said.

“I am pleased to once again convey greetings of the Syrian leadership and its tremendous gratitude to the Russian leadership as well as wish the Russian people prosperity and progress,” the ambassador added.

The top diplomat once again drew attention to the official position of Damascus, which is in favor of termination of the conflict and establishment of comprehensive peace and justice in accordance with U.N. resolutions.

“Syria is confident that reestablishment of peace in the Middle East contributes to the strengthening of stability in the world,” the ambassador noted. He confirmed “Syria’s bid to strengthen bilateral cooperation with the Russian friends, which will help to preserve values and interests of our countries and will be a factor of stability and security all over the world”.
